Month 2

Well, sadly not  leaps and bounds ahead of January, but there are some changes that might not be obvious to the eye.

Deodorant - as with so many items it is from before our challenge. We can now report that 3 out of 4 of us are using deodorant from a friend who makes it out of roses and sunshine and puts it into a glass jar that she will refill with more magic for our pits.

Floss - there's less of it because I've started re-using mine. Works great! Now to convince the fam.

Yarn - it's not a natural fibre. We're paying much closer attention to what our clothing and other textiles are made from is a new awakening for us. Textiles that don't compost are a much bigger problem than I/we realized and we will pay closer attention to our purchases in the future.

Bread ties - evil. Pure evil. However, like I said last month, I get bread from a day-old stand and am told it was headed for the dumpster anyway. We also bake our own fairly often, but not often enough to keep up with the toast lovers in this family.

Fruit stickers - I'll bet if we add these up the world over it would be an enormous heap each day. Isn't there a better way?

A tennis ball that Juno destroyed.

Styrofoam cup from gelato when a friend treated Aria.

A Tim's cup - not recyclable.

A Tim's cup filled with dishwasher soap wrappers! This one makes me so mad because I specifically picked the cardboard box of soap and not the plastic tub in our effort to have less plastic, only to find that they are individually wrapped. Not impressed.

Butter wrappers - hmmm...not sure what to do about this yet.

We broke down and ate more chips. Would someone please figure out a sustainable way to package and sell those?!? I didn't realize how strong our love is for these suckers. They make every meal better!

Plastic fruit nets - we're really trying to buy only in bulk or at least in paper boxes, but My Lanta that is hard to do!!

Truth be told, this month I felt like giving up. When in all of Superstore there is not one orange that is not already wrapped in plastic to be bought, it can be discouraging! However we persevered and made it through, and perhaps even made some progress toward zero waste. Bring it on March!

  1. Hey! Just started following your blog after I read about it in the local newspaper.
You could brush your teeth with pure baking soda-not greatest taste, but it works....or use mouthwash-huge bottle, many brushings! This is what I am doing after my failed attempt to make homemade... which turned hard and was gross! Probably better recipes out there!
