Day 11 - Jessie Honeyman State Park

The Last Shall be First

We feel so lucky because we have one of the nicest campsites we've seen in the park, and when we booked, it was one of the last ones left, so we assumed it would be the one no one wanted. Au contraire, mon frere, as it has a path that leads straight to the dunes, it is nestled into a hill so it's sheltered from the wind, and is just a few steps from the bathroom. The hill has been great for the girls as they are enjoying the challenge of climbing it and exploring it's flora and fauna (Scummy and all his friends).

We awoke to gorgeous sunshine streaming into the camper. After waking up to mist and fog for the last number of days, the sun was more than welcome. After a stack of pancakes and a cup of coffee, we were ready for the day.

We began with a hike through the sand dunes. We explored the huge hills of sand and enjoyed watching the dune buggies.  The sand is very challenging to walk in at times because it is so soft and it falls away under your feet. Some dunes were also very steep. Kaija had a hard time enjoying herself as she was so afraid of being hit by an ATV which zoom around everywhere, and often you are out of sight behind a dune.

In the afternoon we checked out the Sea Lion Caves. Peeeuuuw! They are stinky creatures. We took an elevator down 20 stories down to sea level where the sea lions like to rest in a cave. There you could watch them resting, fighting and swimming. It was 9C in the cave, so it was hard to believe that they could be comfortable there, but they looked so relaxed that they must not be cold.
After watching them for about ½ hour, we browsed in the gift shop where the girls found dolphin earrings to buy with spending money from their Oma. Aria wants to get her ears pierced for her 7th birthday when we get home.

We capped off the day with the first campfire of the trip. We played telephone and made up some new verses to the Mountain Dew song. A great day!
